When translators say they are using translation software for their work, it often raises eyebrows. ‘So you are using Google Translate?’ is not an unfamiliar question. Translation software however does a whole different job. In this blog post I explain what translation software actually is.
On my computer I have an incredible amount of translation software installed. There are Trados Studio (including 2017 for beta-testing purposes), MemoQ (different releases, which can be installed alongside each other), Memsource Editor (lightweight but powerful), Across (too heavy to work with on a regular basis), Transit NXT (required by a client but never used), Wordfast (license expired), Fluency (won in a contest but never used) and Idiom WorldServer (idle as I use MemoQ to translate these kind of files) to name a few. As a technology fan always eager to learn new things, I think I have many more CAT tools than the average translator. That raises a question: How many CAT tools should you need?
It has taken a long time to find it out, but today I was finally able to translate INDD files in Trados Studio. That’s why I’m sharing this blog post today to make clear how you can translate InDesign files in Trados Studio. It requires a quick turn around, but it is certainly worth the effort!

Earlier this week Kilgray released MemoQ 2015. I am using the software since about 5 years and have always been excited about the logic and intelligence of the CAT tool, but less about the usability. In fact I even called MemoQ a “container” because of it’s bold interface. However, many has been changed since then. Perhaps that’s the reason why so many agencies I work for are slowly moving to it (mainly using the server feature).
Working on an offline project in MemoQ 2014 I decided to give MemoQ 2015 a try and yes, I’m more excited than ever.

When I worked on a great translation project today, my computer went stuck for some reason. That’s why I did a hard reboot by pressing the on/off button 10 seconds until the PC was switched off and started it again. But then, I was unable to start MemoQ again. Fortunately I found a solution.
In my daily life I am an avid user of Trados Studio 2014. In my humble opinion it is not the very best CAT tool ever made, but it is quite easy to work with. For more advanced tasks I use MemoQ, which I love for it’s intelligence but hate for it’s bold interface. But when I use it, I like it.
Until last week: I got a MemoQ mscorlib error which rendered the translation software useless at all. None of my installed versions, MemoQ 2013 R2, MemoQ 6.2 and MemoQ 2014 (what I love is that Kilgray unlike SDL allows to install different versions) did work any longer.
However, the solution is nearer than you think…
In my previous blog article I wrote about opening XLZ files in MemoQ. To benefit from MemoQ’s feature to translate XLZ files we need to have a TM too. Creating a TM in MemoQ is not that difficult but using the legacy TM from Idiom Worldserver Desktop Workbench is. MemoQ offers an option to import a translation memory in TMX or CSV format, but Idiom Worldserver Desktop Workbench not even offers an option to export Idiom TM’s.
So, to make use of the TM your client provides or to use the translations you collected in all the years you use Idiom Worldserver Desktop Workbench, you need to have a workaround which allows you to use all translated segments in another CAT tool. You need to export Idiom TM. That’s what I will explain below.
In my blog post two weeks ago, I explained how you can run Idiom Worldserver Desktop Workbench on Windows 8. I got some nice reactions on that post: people finally got Idiom Worldserver Desktop Workbench running on Windows 8.1.
Until now I did not receive comments from people for whom this solution did not work out. Nevertheless there can be situations in which it can be preferable to open Idiom Desktop XLZ files in another CAT tool. This blog post is dedicated to opening XLZ files in MemoQ. Later this week I will add an article dedicated to Export Idiom TM.
