As translators we all need more than our CAT tools every now and then. Although CAT tools can do a lot of tasks for us, they often cannot convert files, values and units properly. They also are not able to make advanced measurements, like converting square feet to square metres. Tools like conversion software and calculators are then quite useful. There was a time when we needed software or advanced mathematical calculators for that but in this time of cloud computing there are many more options. How to export a Memsource TM in Trados Studio

Using Memsource Editor as a freelance translator is easy: you only need to download the editor and download the files that need to be translated. In Memsource Editor you login and the software then automatically connects to an online translation memory. Segment suggestions (whether it be fuzzy matches or machine translations) show up really fast and new translations are saved in a flash. The major caveat of Memsource Editor from a translators perspective however is that the translation memory only is accessible while working on a specific job. As soon as the job is done and the file is sent, you will loose access to all your home-made translations. I found a workaround that enables you to use your translations in a later stage.

Solving MemoQ’s “System.TypeInitializationException” error

When I worked on a great translation project today, my computer went stuck for some reason. That’s why I did a hard reboot by pressing the on/off button 10 seconds until the PC was switched off and started it again. But then, I was unable to start MemoQ again. Fortunately I found a solution.

5 free top extensions for Trados Studio 2014

One of the greatest features of Trados Studio 2014 to me was the introduction of Open Exchange, a kind of marketplace for free and paid extensions for Trados Studio. Since it was introduced I am eagerly looking for extensions that can improve or speed up my translations. I am still dreaming of creating extensions myself once, but I bet that will never happen.
Luckily I can still download any extensions offered by a community of developers. If you never visited the Store, I would certainly recommend you to visit it today. For your convenience I created an overview of extensions you shouldn’t miss.

Opening a large file in Trados Studio 2014

It might not be a surprise for frequent visitors of my blog: I’m an avid user of Trados Studio 2014 – not because it’s the best but because it works so easy. Especially the option to open a document without creating a whole project is great. I’m using that feature a couple of times a day and it really speeds up my work. But last week I had to open a large document in Trados Studio 2014 and that resulted in an annoying error. Here’s a workaround.

MemoQ mscorlib error: solution

In my daily life I am an avid user of Trados Studio 2014. In my humble opinion it is not the very best CAT tool ever made, but it is quite easy to work with. For more advanced tasks I use MemoQ, which I love for it’s intelligence but hate for it’s bold interface. But when I use it, I like it.
Until last week: I got a MemoQ mscorlib error which rendered the translation software useless at all. None of my installed versions, MemoQ 2013 R2, MemoQ 6.2 and MemoQ 2014 (what I love is that Kilgray unlike SDL allows to install different versions) did work any longer.
However, the solution is nearer than you think…

Logoport Xliff Editor – Logoport.dll not found

LionBridge is as a massive translation agency with an enormous and vibrant community. For its cloud infrastructure for projects, translation memories and term bases the company developed its own software, ‘Logoport Xliff editor’. To get this software working you should download both the Xliff editor software itself and a dedicated MS Office plugin. I did and it worked…
However, after installing both software components every call of a MS Office feature, like opening MS Word and using the spell check in other software suites like Trados and Wordfast resulted in an annoying Visual Basic error: Error 53 – The following file cannot be found: Logoport.dll.
I found a solution which I would like to share with you…

The Periodic Table of Trados Shortcuts

We all know the Periodic Table of Elements. That table we learned about in secondary school: an overview of gases, metals and other stuff – as far as I remember. I am not a beta so all I know is that it exists.
As a freelance translator I do not have to know that table although I think it’s good to know about it. To do my job properly I need to know what CAT tools are, what I am talking about in terms of subjects and terminology and how I can work efficient and profitable. That’s where Trados comes in.
